About the Exhibition
Cabinet of Curiosities showcases original multimedia artworks created by thirteen artists. Touching upon themes of international politics, nature, cultural memory, decorative arts & technology, each artist creates a unique dialogue via the art object’s size & materials. The technical specificities in such small formats challenge the grandiose nature of art in museums or galleries & beckons the viewer to engage in an intimate relationship with the artworks. There is a newly-formed cabinet of curiosity created by this exhibition, one that is formed not by parading oddities but is fused by the shared display of a contemporary creative dialogue.
About the Curator
San Antonio native Claudia Zapata is pursuing her Ph.D. at Southern Methodist University in the RASC/a: Rhetorics of Art, Space & Culture Program in Art History. She received her BA & MA from The University of Texas at Austin in art history, specializing in Pre-Columbian & U.S. Latino/Chicano art. From 2010-2014 she served as the Curator of Exhibitions & Programs at Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas. Her recent projects include the co-founding of ChingoZine, a Latino art zine & Chingolandia, a Latino designer toy line as part of her Latino art collective, Puro Chingón Collective, LLC. Zapata has curated over 30 exhibitions at Mexic-Arte Museum & other Texas institutions on subjects such as the commercialization of the Day of the Dead holiday, Mexican dance masks, Contemporary Chicano art, lucha libre in popular culture & more. Her most recent publication acted as the main catalog essay for Margarita Cabrera’s Uprooted Dreams, a recent Austin Art in Public Places Program installation using Oaxacan woodcarving to discuss cultural displacement. Her research interests include curatorial methodologies of identity-based exhibitions, Texas Neo-Chicanoism, exhibition design & people of color zines & designer toys.
Cabinet of Curiosities traveled from March 1, 2015-March 31, 2015.

MARCH 2014
SHORT STORIES reflected personal tales shaped as portraits from surreal to ethereal & from rasquache to retrospective. Lady Base Gallery presented artists who have never before exhibited artwork this miniature in a museum.

The MINI ART MUSEUM:
Spare Parts founded its MINI ART MUSEUM in 2013 to bring the fine arts museum experience to schools & the community (from ages 6 through adult). This opportunity for schools seeks to eliminate bus fees & sometimes complicated scheduling to simply bring the fine art museum experience to classrooms, like yours!

The MINI ART MUSEUM experience at your school:
The tiny artworks for the spring 2014 exhibition have been curated by Lady Base Gallery. Artists were invited to create a wee work specifically for this exhibition that will only be viewable through the MINI ART MUSEUM. After the tour, your students are
lead in a mini art-making workshop inspired by the exhibition.
School visits will include:
- the installation of the MINI ART MUSEUM on your campus
- a docent-lead tour of the MINI ART MUSEUM
- magnifying glasses for students to view artwork
- mini art-making workshop inspired by the exhibition
